Dry eye drops, such as hypromellose, are often the ‘first line therapy’ chosen by the GP, meaning they contain the best efficacy with the best safety profile and/or the lowest cost.
Additionally, other demulcents such as polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), polyethylene glycol, propylene glycol and other polymers were combined together or with HPMC or CMC in the search to achieve the ideal recipe and balance. This still goes on, with almost endless and subtle variations. These basic dry eye drops are still available and, for a number of various non-clinical reasons, are the most widely prescribed by the NHS.
However, our knowledge, understanding and ability to develop superior products, that undoubtedly benefit the patient more, has moved on. These will be discussed in greater detail in the next article.
