What have been your career highlights?
The highlights would surely include the day I qualified as a professional pharmacist, completed my two postgrad Masters in Diabetes and Clinical Pharmacy, became a Diabetes UK Clinical Champion, and recently speaking at an evidence session at the RPS office in London on my role as a diabetes specialist pharmacist in primary care. These points in my journey were pivotal career stages that did symbolise how far in my journey I had come.
Who are the top five mentors in your career?
If I am honest I haven’t had direct career mentors, however, there have been numerous individuals along the way that have inspired me, such as Dr Andrea Norris a Consultant in Endocrinology and Diabetes at Hampshire Hospital Foundation Trust. She was my independent prescribing DMP and developed my special interest and involvement in diabetes. Another include Prof John Purvis who was the once head of the Bradford School of Pharmacy, an inspiring lecturer who inspired me to early on decide what kind of pharmacist I would like to become. I have also been inspired by Prof Kamlesh Khunti who gave a couple of presentations during my diabetes masters course at the Leicester diabetes centre, his achievements in primary care inspired me to believe there is a much-needed diabetes service role for pharmacists in the community and primary care sectors.
What’s next for you?
I think I am at a comfortable point in my career but I still have a goal to ensure Pharmacy remains relevant as a profession and financially rewarding as a career for the generations behind. I look forward to developing into a Community Consultant Pharmacist in Diabetes, as well as keeping the momentum on the pharmacist’s role in GP practice. I would like to continue to use my positions within Diabetes UK to drive more recognition for Pharmacists and pharmacy-related professionals, pushing for national and local inclusion of community pharmacists into the diabetes care service delivery and referral pathways. I would like to get more involved in the education and training of undergrads to inspire and ensure the profession has a brighter future.
