MSPs have been given the opportunity to find out just how easy it is to give someone their flu jab at Community Pharmacy Scotland’s exhibition stand in the Garden Lobby of the Scottish Parliament.
Community Pharmacy Scotland (CPS) wants to see flu jabs and other vaccinations offered as an NHS service in the 1250 community pharmacies across Scotland as part of the solution to vaccination service transformation in Scotland. CPS believes that by engaging community pharmacies and other service providers, the NHS can reach many more people who are eligible for and would benefit from an NHS flu vaccination.
Currently, the 1978 NHS (Scotland) Act prevents NHS vaccinations from being given in community pharmacies or by any other third party to the NHS. In other countries such as England and Wales, this is not the case. This law should be changed for patient safety, patient convenience and in order to achieve the WHO targets on ‘herd immunity’ for vulnerable groups, which Scotland consistently falls well below. Flu jabs are currently provided by some community pharmacies as a non-NHS service. Not all community pharmacies provide this service and community pharmacies do not organise the stock of flu jabs in Scotland.
The exhibition in the Garden Lobby of the Scottish Parliament was sponsored by Gordon MacDonald MSP. Community Pharmacy Scotland have chosen to demonstrate just how simple it is to give a flu jab so that MSPs can have a go and see the benefit in terms of ease of access for the public if community pharmacy provided this service alongside other service providers.
The following MSPs have shown support for the initiative over the last few days.

Angus MacDonald MSP commented;
“It makes sense to me! Happy to support flu jabs as an NHS service in community pharmacies.”
Community Pharmacy Scotland CEO Harry McQuillan said:
“Many community pharmacies already provide private vaccination services. The unique accessibility of the community pharmacy network makes our place in vaccine provision a no-brainer: all that’s limiting the options for the NHS is a 40-year old law that is no longer fit for purpose. As the MSPs will see over the course of our exhibition, it’s simple, safe and effective for our pharmacy teams to be part of Scotland’s NHS vaccine delivery service.”
